"It has been a pleasure working with you, Yukimura-san," Gokudera said because damnit he could suck up as well as any of the others, and Yukimura's sidekick reminded him of Hibari and it was much better to be safe than risk an explosion just when they're closing operations.
Yukimura smiled. Gokudera was good with smiles: he got hit by Mukuro's often enough to shrug it off. Next to him, Basil looked appropriately charmed. Nice kid, not so good at the human nature thing.
"A small matter like this is well within my powers to deal with," Yukimura said. Gokudera smelt a rat. "It's fortunate I didn't have to go to higher authority."
Wait what?!
Gokudera'd been under the impression that Yukimura was running his own show. Certainly that's what they said, and certainly everyone jumped if he so much as blinked. You didn't get that kind of respect without being boss, and Gokudera should know. He'd been trying for it long enough.
"Higher... authority?" Gokudera managed, looking around the room. Hibari-type guy with the sword, video-game boy, Yukimura... there didn't seem to be anyone extra present. He could relax a little.
"Easy enough to send Niou off to deal with your little problem. If I'd had to ask the main house to get involved, things might have got messier."
Video-game boy looked like he might have quite enjoyed messier.
"You're not doing so badly yourself." Gokudera knew when he'd been rumbled.
Yukimura laughed.
"Ah well, it's Tezuka you have to watch out for, really. We're merely the assassination squad. Tezuka sends his regards to your boss, and wonders if we could arrange a practice match sometime."
"...Practice match."
Yukimura waved a hand. "Practice match, training session, mock combat, whatever you choose to call it. Plenty of blood, no casualties except by accident."
"Right. I'll pass it on."
Somehow Gokudera got the impression he was out of his depth.
"Sanada will see you to your car. You know how to get in contact should you be interested in further negotiations."
All that for the local Varia. That was it: Japan was all Hibari's.
